...inside look to the Art and Soul of SWU: C-Dex

Since 2007, C-Dex has been active in the music project Sonic Warriors United. Here's a little insight in his music, work and career as Liveact.

How did you get into music?

My father was a drummer in a band and therefore, the whole day music was played in the background at home. One day, I think it was around 1999, I started to organize parties with friends in my hometown, where we started playing records.

You've been performing as a Liveact for several years now. From what do you get your ideas for new tracks?

I take my ideas from my day-to-day environment and society. This puts me in a certain mood. These feelings have influence on my music. With them, I go into my studio and experiment with sounds and put different rhythms together.

How do you start with a new track, do you have something like a ritual?

No, I don’t have any ritual. When I have an idea, I try to stick with it and implement it as soon as possible. As I said, I also experiment a lot with sounds. Sometimes I just start immediately and see what I get out of my work.

The names of your tracks are very inventive. Do they have a special meaning? (e.g. dailyconfusion or thinkingmachines)

The track dailyconfusion, for example, describes the daily chaos which each individual is experiencing every day. The name thinking machines came into my mind, when I was thinking about the idea, that electronic music – as an emotional medium – could breathe life into machines or robots, because they do not have any emotion. So the idea was to connect digital music and machines, virtually giving machines emotions. Quite difficult to explain.

How many tracks have you already published?

Well, I published a couple of tracks, e.g. two on the Sonic Warriors Compilation Vol. 1 and on YouTube there is a remix of the track Imperfect by Daniel Triana (New Jersey, USA). You can also find a handful of tracks on the internet.

As I already said, you have been active as Liveact and producing for several years now. How did this happen, were you a DJ as well?

Well, one day I just lost the fun of Djing. That was the time when my best friend died in an accident. With him, I had spent many hours a day listening to music and producing. He had a great influence on me and my music. During our music productions we complemented each other quite well. We always produced the music the way we wanted to hear it. That’s why I started playing this sound live, because this is the kind of music I wanted to hear and play. For quite some time I am also performing as DJ again.

Which artists had a lasting influence on you and still affect you?

Artists who try to make honest music and try to remain independent affect me the most, because they keep their own identity. I talk about musicians of all genres. I listen to so many different music styles which inspire my music and me. In any case, Aphex Twin and Prodigy influenced me the most in the beginning. They created complete new musical genres. Also the musicians in my circle of friends and acquaintances inspire me a lot. During the last years, I was more active in the industrial music scene and won many impressions. I use these influences for my music. Meanwhile, I find the Techno scene interesting again. A lot of positive things happened in recent times. For quite a while I was really frustrated about several developments in the scene.

Which developments do you mean?

I am talking about organizers, producers or DJ’s who put the music in the background and profit in the foreground. I think this says everything!

Techno music or better electronic music
  • is understanding
  • is solidarity
  • is a statement
  • is a feeling and
  • is not a product.
Which kind of music are you listening in private?

I am a Techno child but as compensation I am listening to e.g. Nine Inch Nails, Korn, Nirvana, Radiohead or Prodigy, who are probably the most common.

Are there any projects you are currently working on?

For quite some time I am working on a compilation. This will be my first album/CD. On it, I would like to release remixes from other artists as well.

What is important to you in life?

The fact that you know where you stand, always think forward, art, fight injustice, question things… there is a lot more...

Interview in Deutsch:
