Greetings everyone, things have been very busy here at the Sonic Warriors United central. We're planning our upcoming tours and showcases plus working on a new SWU compilation.

We've been keeping our Sonic Seekers in mind and would like to start a little something to up the fun factor for those of you that have been requesting SWU merchandise.

We will be doing spontaneous online giveaways, so here's your chance to get your hands on SWU stickers, buttons, t-shirts, hoodies, hats and more.

Being that the art and soul of our SWU project is about the fusion of Electro, Techno, EBM, Industrial Beats and Atmospheres this should be a lot of fun for everyone. We will be posting a scrambled artist name or project name* that you need to unscramble in order to receive a SWU reward.

Here's how to get started:

Hello all, thing's have been busy here in the Sonic Warriors United Bunker, but we have found the time to keep everyone updated on things of interest and SWU activty.

Last month some of the crew made it out to a few live shows, enjoyed meeting, greeting associates and supporters of our project. You can get a taste of it all in the Wave Gotik Treffen Leipzig 2011 Rewind in sounds and images.

There was also new sound manipulation via frequen-c remixes architect (unoffical) and discovery of some favorite software Etwas aus der VST Ecke

We care a lot about Cafe Soundz!

Cafe Soundz owned and operated by Bobby Lisi, is a record store and more. With a good selection of electronic music, independent clothing lines and accessories. Bobby has established a solid 22 years of being a hub for connecting the subculture society in the New Jersey and New York area. He will be closing the store during the American holiday, "Labor Day" weekend [ September 5, 2011 ]. This will be a great lost to the area.

Recalling my days/nights early 1990's:

At the store, one of my first 12" purchases was Al Comet, along with hearing Bobby Dj regularly at the Pipeline in Newark, N.J and the added BIG plus, I had the opportunity of doing a KK Records / Cargo Records showcase with his support for Psychick Warriors ov Gaia. All truly great connecting moments.

It's a blessing to have this wealth of information on any kind of subject in these days of the internet. This has been unthinkable just a few years ago. And although it might take some effort to dig through things, there's no real excuse nowadays to say 'I don't know'.
So instead of dulling your mind with just bulk-downloading MP3s, why not use these resources to deepen your understanding and knowledge of music you're listening to?

A good place to start is the video lectures of the Red Bull Music Academy. It doesn't come in more handy and pleasant than this since you get a proper in-depth talk with great artists who speak their minds on all sorts of aspects of their musical life and productions, while playing tunes here and there to illustrate what they are referring to.

A lecture takes about 110 minutes but this is well spent time, considering that you can just kick back and enjoy watching instead of reading things up (they have written transcripts though if you like to). Below are two great lectures that should be of interest for SWU people. Visit the Video Lectures site for more of them.

CMT Bitcrusher

Dieser VST Effekt von CMT ist ein kleines aber feines Plugin, der seinen Aufgaben gerecht wird. Viele Einstellmöglichkeiten gibt es zwar nicht aber diese beherrscht er mit Bravour.

Drive

Der Vorverstärker regelt die Lautstärke des Signals. Hier hat man die Möglichkeit zwischen 0-24 DB auf eine Stelle nach dem Komma zu wählen, dies kann bei schwachem Eingangssignal von Vorteil sein.

Bit-Depth

Die Bittiefe lässt sich von 1-24Bit frei wählen. Man spricht hier von Bit-Reduktion.
Importiert man das Plugin in seinen Sequenzer liegt eine voreingestellte Bittiefe von 24 Bit an.

Downsampling

Dieser Regler steuert die Abtastrate des Ausgangssignals. Die volle Abtastrate ist beim Import in den Sequenzer Standard Die Wahlmöglichkeit liegt zwischen 1-40x. Durch das Regeln des Downsampling ändert sich die Klangfarbe des Ausgangssignals.

Fazit

Der Bitcrusher ist zwar nicht das Neuste vom Neuen aber er hat immer noch seinen Reiz.
In meinen Produktionen findet er immer wieder Verwendung. Unter Ableton Live arbeitet der Zwerg einwandfrei. Gerade die wenigen Einstellmöglichkeiten machen diesen Effekt so Interessant. I loved the experimental and noisy Emptyset LP from 2009 but what they came up with here is really a surprise: Cornelius Harris of Underground Resistance is preaching over harsh Emptyset grooves - and it definitely blows you out of your socks! This is a new and quite promising label. The first release is very experimental and lo-fi, it drifts between somewhat Dupstep- and Techno-like broken beats. Very dark and sinister and for fans of British Murder Boys / Surgeon, Perc, Stroboscopic Artifacts, Prologue and the like.

This is a side-project of Milton Bradley, known for his Do Not Resist The Beat! label. DNRTB! records have this dark and stripped-down Techno vibe that is often referred to as 'Berghain Techno'. This label here is similar in terms of sound but it leaves the straight Techno groove behind and goes directly for abstract sound and beat sculptures. I like some of the DNRTB! stuff but I find this new project more interesting, also more interesting then the much hyped Raim releases. Fans of Demdike Stare should listen up as well.

"Electronic Porn" ist der Name einer Veranstaltungsreihe vom Herrn Andypendent aus Giessen, die jetzt mittlerweile in die 53.Runde geht.
Programm im "MUK" ist elektronische Musik des größtenteils dunklen Sektors mit einer bunten Mischung aus Future- und Synthiepop, verschiedenen Electrostilen und EBM auf dem "Softcore"-Floor, was regelmässig durch Livegigs von mainstreamigeren Acts, aber auch von anspruchsvolleren Künstlern wie Dirk Ivens, Eric van Wonterghem oder Patenbrigade:Wolff und Klangstabil abgerundet wird.
Die Qualität der Playlist des Abends hängt natürlich auch von den wechselnden DJs ab.
Im Bunker, dem "Hardcore"-Floor, unterirdisch, ausgestattet mit Strobes und Nebelmaschine, hat man als DJ eigentlich Narrenfreiheit, sollte sich aber schon in den krachigeren Gefilden bewegen, da aber auch dort von Party zu Party gewechselt wird, gibt es bei manchen Plattendrehern Oldschool-EBM, bei anderen Neo-Folk und Industrial, und bei ganz anderen, wie zum Beispiel auch meiner Wenigkeit :-) , einen Kessel Buntes aus Rhythm'n'Noise,Power Electronics, Techno und EBM für Leute, denen "Forms of Hands" oder das "Maschinenfest" und auch die "Sonic Warriors United" ein Begriff sind.
Im Großen und Ganzen also eine empfehlenswerte Veranstaltung, wenn man sich auch mal etwas mainstreamiger amüsieren kann und auch den richtigen Abend abpasst.

鉄男 / Tetsuo - The Iron Man

Maybe I'm running into open doors with this but since this movie rarely gets a mention these days, I thought doing a post about it would be a good idea. If you know it already, then take this as an inducement to watch it again. And for those who don't know... well, you're in for an insane ride...

Tetsuo by cult director Shinya Tsukamoto is without a doubt in every all-time-top-ten list of Cyberpunk movies and it doesn't get more industrial than this. Made in 1989, this black and white avant-garde film with a runtime of about one hour doesn't come with ordinary storytelling. Its highly aestheticised structure is a bit scattered, although you can make out what it is about: a man, who's body turns into some sort of cyborg or robot and encounters... different situations, as he gradually... rots or rusts (?) In this respect, the movie's appearance isn't too far from David Lynch's Eraserhead. Indeed, Lynch's masterpiece could serve as a good measure for you to decide if you can bear (or even like) Tetsuo. But this one goes further as it is more... uptempo and strident, so to speak.

Needles to say that you surely shouldn't be faint-hearted as it is rated 18+ in most countries. But if violence, sex, insanity, flesh, industrial decay, steel and metal (...tons of it) sounds like an interesting combination to you, then give it a go. (For an extra portion of masochism: watch it when you have a bad headache - pain-galore, guaranteed! ...speaking of own experiences here... ;-)

You can probably find it online but this cult-movie deserves a proper home cinema style of watching. Good video rental stores should have it too, maybe you've got to ask for it. Vielleicht renne ich hiermit ja offene Türen ein, aber da dieser Film heutzutage selten erwähnt wird, dachte ich, dass es keine schlechte Idee wäre darüber zu schreiben. Falls ihr den schon kennt, dann nehmt das einfach als Anlass ihn nochmal zu schauen. Und für die, die ihn nicht kennen... nun, ihr lasst euch da auf einen wahnsinnigen Ritt ein...

Tetsuo von Kult-Regisseur Shinya Tsukamoto ist zweifellos in jeder Top-10-Aller-Zeiten-Liste der Cyberpunk-Filme zu finden und es geht sicher nicht mehr "industrial" als hier. 1989 gedreht, hat dieser schwarz-weiße Avantgarde-Film mit einer Länge von ca. einer Stunde keinen herkömmlichen Handlungsablauf. Seine sehr ästhetisierte Struktur ist etwas fragmentarisch, obwohl man schon mitbekommt, worum es geht: ein Mann, dessen Körper sich in eine Art Cyborg oder Roboter verwandelt und... in verschiedene Situationen gerät, während er langsam... verfault oder verrostet (?) In dieser Hinsicht ist die Erscheinung des Films nicht allzu weit von David Lynch's Eraserhead entfernt. Tatsächlich könnt ihr Lynch's Meisterwerk als Maßstab nehmen, um zu entscheiden, ob ihr mit Tetsuo klarkommt (oder ihn sogar mögt). Aber dieser hier geht noch ein Stück weiter, weil er ein höheres Tempo hat und schriller ist... sozusagen.

Es muss nicht extra erwähnt werden, dass ihr gewiss keine schwachen Nerven haben solltet, da der Film in den meisten Ländern erst ab 18 empfohlen wird. Aber falls Gewalt, Sex, Wahnsinn, Fleisch, industrieller Niedergang, Stahl und Metall (...tonnenweise) nach einer interessanten Mischung für euch klingt, dann probiert ihn einfach mal aus. (Für eine Extra-Portion an Masochismus: schaut ihn, wenn ihr starke Kopfschmerzen habt - Schmerz in Hülle und Fülle ist garantiert! ...ich spreche aus eigener Erfahrung... ;-)

Wahrscheinlich könnt ihr ihn Online finden, aber dieser Kult-Film verdient ein anständiges Heimkino-Erlebnis. Gute Videotheken sollen ihn auch haben, vielleicht müsst ihr danach fragen. The Problem of Misrepresentative "Industrial" Event Billing

Anyone who's gone to an "industrial" music night since the mid/late 1990's has experienced a problem that's now grown into an epidemic. The bill says, "industrial [listed first in the billing], goth, synthpop, futurepop, ect" and you say "I like industrial...I think I'll go." You get there and they play no industrial at all...or...they play only industrial that's considered vintage, as if there's no brand new bands that create music rooted in the aesthetics of the original "industrial" music culture. [When the words "pop" and "industrial" had absolutely nothing to do with each other.]

A simple solution: If you want to feature "future pop," please leave the "industrial" genre classification out of it. Specificity in billing also saves your event from getting unwarranted negative reviews because the playlists contradict your event billing, not because the music wasn't "good."

What's the Difference Between "Old School" and "The Old Days?"

After hearing many people who clearly were too young to have been alive during the founding of the genre they're discussing, I decided to provide a definition to clear things up. Important note; this isn't intended to be a form of cultural stratification. This is only a way of identifying the difference between a genre's origin versus a person discovering a genre that has generations of evolution behind it.

- If you find a genre and its key bands/projects are currently releasing their 3rd or 4th albums, then they are your "old days" but not "old school" in connection to the genre.

- If you remember when a genre didn't exist, [meaning...it actually didn't, not you didn't know about it] and the genre hadn't yet developed a sort of top-ten list of focus bands/projects, then the term "old school" is applicable for you and the genre.

The term old school, for those who are, is a kind of badge of honor for being part of the development of a genre. Being a child of the early 1960's, it gave me a perfect vantage point to see [and be part of] the evolution of the primary musical food groups punk rock, hip hop, metal, industrial, techno, and noise.
